I was reading the section on “Disenchantment and the New Animism” in “Environmental Ethics” by Andrew Brennan and Yeuk-Sze Lo. Brennan and Lo describes how we look at nature with positive disenchanment. They use humans as an example, where humans can be studied and probed with an attitude that is detached from nature. Brennan and Lo talk about Theodore Adorno’s idea about advocating re-enchantment towards nature. This involves looking at nature as an animist/panpsychist. I’d like to believe that animals and plants have souls that have meaning. Maybe if other people had a similar outlook we would have more reverence towards nature.
